Lovely Lilies Applique Quilt Pattern

Lovely Lilies Applique quilt block

Lovely Lilies is the second pattern in my series of large scale floral applique blocks. Like many quilters I am endlessly inspired by my garden and all the wild flowers in my midwest state of Kansas. I love seeing all the happy orange lilies that grow wild in our ditches along the road side. I made my first version of this quilt block several years ago and I have made several different versions of it for quilts over the years. I love how versatile it is and how fun it is so combine with either special fussy cut fabric or just some beautiful solids. Also, sometimes I add the centers tot he lilies and sometimes I don’t. I also vary where and how many of the little pollen berries I add to the quilt. It is my hope that you will buy the pattern, and make the block, but make it your own by playing with the placements or even the background size. The background fabric is 32 inches, but it could easily be made larger so you would have more negative space to quit and also a larger finished quilt. The options are many.

Please be inspired by the following quilts while you plan your Lovely Lilies quilt.

Lovely Lilies and Love Apples combined to make a wonderful 4 block applique quilt

In the above quilt I combined two Lovely Lilies blocks and two Love Apple blocks to create a very fun four block applique quilt. Four of these large scale blocks make a great throw size quilt. Please note that I did not add centers to all the lilies. Some of the lily fabric was fussy cut and I wanted to cover up those treasured fabrics. I also added some very fun prairie points around the edge of the quilt. I didn’t want to add a border, but I did want to do something to make this quilt very special. The prairie points were just the thing! If you want to give prairie points a try a have a very simple tutorial on YouTube. The link will be at the bottom of this blog.

Lovely Lilies as a four block applique quilt.

In the above quilt I used four Lovely Lilies Applique quilt blocks. I wanted the quilt to be large enough for my bed so I added some sashing in the center with an appliqued vine as well as a wide outer border.

Lovely Lilies as a smaller medallion quilt

In this version of Lovely Lilies I combined the central lily block with some fun improv pieced borders. I love to make strip pieced vines (totally inspired by Susan McCord’s 1800’s applique quilts) and Improv stars are always fun to make and add some whimsey to any quilt. With the exception of the fussy cut portions of applique this quilt is made entirely of solid fabric. You will also notice that I did not custom quilt this version. I used a digital edge to edge names Jess’s Swirls. While I enjoy custom quilting, I know others do not. You can easily quilt right over applique.

Scrappy version of Lovely Lilies medallion quilt

For the above version of Lovely Lilies I dove into my scrap fabric. I pieced the background of the central block with low volume prints and then added my applique. I also wanted the fun fabrics I selected to be the focus, so I did not add the centers to the lilies, and I put the pollen dots above each lily instead of on the lily itself. I carried on with the low volume scrappy backgrounds with the improv borders. This was a very fun puzzle to make come together. I was in a hurry, so I did not strip piece the wild vine.

There are so many options and opprutunities to make your Lovely Liliy appliqe block into something wonderful and totally unique. Please enjoy making your version and I would love to see what you make, so please share with #lovelylilies in social media!
